The Three Maries
oratorio-performance from 2020
oratorio-performance from 2020
The Three Maries tells the story of women accompanying Jesus in his passion and resurrection: Mary Mother of God, Mary Magdalene, and Mary of Clopas. The performance was inspired by the sculptures from Crucifixion – the altar by Dutch medieval masters. It was the central place of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Pruszcz Gdański for centuries. This late medieval Antwerp polyptych is now in the National Museum in Warsaw.
The Three Maries is a musical work by Anna Rocławska-Musiałczyk. The composer uses texts from the Old and New Testaments, old church songs and contemporary religious poetry. The new timbral shape and the sum of all the elements ultimately transform the performance into a mystery play.
Maria’s “revival” was possible thanks to costumes by Małgorzata Wasik, which are an almost exact copy of the sculptures from the altar, and scenography by Cyprian Wieczorkowski, which refers to the Gothic stained glass windows.
Today, the three Maries descend from the altar to take the floor after five hundred years and to become an extraordinary showpiece of high art, which owing to its European origin crosses national borders. The show, although deeply rooted in Christian tradition, carries an absolutely universal message. The women of the Altar cry out for hope and joy of life. The Three Maries is a mystery play full of beauty and universal values.
